Quick Start

Reading a book

Tap any book in your Library to open it. Use the toolbar to switch between single-panel view or split-screen view that shows original and translation side by side.

Setting up translation

Parallèle Reader supports two translation backends:

Apple Translate (free, on-device)

• Requires iOS 18 or later
• Open Apple's Translate app (or Settings → Apps → Translate → Languages) and download the language pack you want
• In Parallèle Reader → Settings → Translation → select Apple Translate

DeepL (your own API key)

• Get a free API key from deepl.com (free tier: 500,000 characters/month)
• In Parallèle Reader → Settings → Translation → Add DeepL Key
• Paste your key

Importing your own books

1. Get the EPUB, PDF, or text file onto your device (AirDrop, email, Files app, cloud download, etc.)
2. Open the Files app
3. Long-press the file → Share → Parallèle Reader
4. The book appears in your Library

Hide-and-reveal mode

Tap the text in the translation panel (in split-screen view) to blur the translation column to test yourself. Tap again to reveal.

FAQ

How do I restore my purchase?

Settings → Restore Purchase. If you previously bought Parallèle Reader on the same Apple ID, it will unlock immediately.

Does Parallèle Reader sync between devices?

Yes, optionally. Settings → iCloud Sync → toggle on. Your reading position, highlights, vocabulary, and bookmarks sync between your iPhone and iPad via your iCloud account. You will have to download the same books to your other device.

Is my reading private?

Yes. Parallèle Reader doesn't collect any data about what you read. iCloud sync uses your private iCloud account directly — no reading data ever reaches the developer's servers. Translations via Apple Translate are processed on-device.

How does the 7-day free trial work?

You get 7 days of full access from first launch. After the trial, your library and bookmarks remain accessible, but the reader is gated until you purchase the lifetime unlock.

Why is the app called "Parallèle Reader"?

"Parallèle" is French for "parallel" — referring to the parallel display of the original text and its translation, side by side. The è with grave accent is part of the brand.

Privacy

A short version: this app collects no personal data, requires no account, and stores everything locally on your device (with optional iCloud sync between your own devices via your Apple ID). Apple Translate is on-device. DeepL is used only if you provide your own API key. iCloud sync goes through Apple's infrastructure, not the developer's servers.
